6 Essential Die Cutting Tools You Need for Scrapbooking & Paper Crafting

Die cutting is one of those paper-crafting skills that feels like magic: you crank a little machine (or press a button), and out pops a perfectly shaped flower, sentiment, or title—clean edges, crisp details, and no fussy cutting.

But if you’ve ever tried die cutting and thought, “Why didn’t this cut all the way through?” or “Why did my die shift?” — you’re not alone. The secret is that dies work best with a few key accessories. Think of them as the “support team” that makes your machine cut cleaner, emboss better, and feel way less frustrating.

✨ What Is Die Cutting (In Plain English)

Die cutting is the process of cutting a shape from paper (or other materials) using a metal “die” and a machine. The die has a raised cutting edge, and your machine uses pressure (manual machines) or a blade (some digital machines) to cut the shape cleanly.

In papercrafting, we usually mean wafer-thin metal dies (lightweight, detailed, and perfect for cards, journals, and scrapbooking).

🧰 Manual vs Electronic Die Cutting Machines

Most crafters start with a manual die cutting machine because it’s simple, travel-friendly, and doesn’t require software. Electronic cutters are amazing too—just a different workflow.

  • Manual machines: rollers + pressure, no software, great for most craft dies.
  • Electronic machines: can cut, write, score, and more—but often require mats, design files, and setup.

No matter which machine you use, the accessories below will make your die cutting cleaner and easier.

✅ The 6 Essential Die Cutting Tools

1) Cutting Plates (Your “Bread Slices”)

Cutting plates are the clear (or opaque) plates that hold your die and paper in place while you run everything through the rollers. They’re the foundation of your sandwich.

  • Use two plates (one bottom, one top) unless your machine’s instructions say otherwise.
  • Expect plates to get “scratched” over time—this is normal and means they’re doing their job.

2) A Metal Shim (For Cleaner, More Detailed Cuts)

A metal shim (or adapter plate) adds a tiny bit of extra pressure. That extra pressure is often what makes the difference between a “meh” cut and a perfect cut—especially for delicate word dies or intricate florals.

  • Use when a die doesn’t cut through in tiny areas.
  • Use for thicker cardstock, detailed dies, or slightly older plates.

3) An Embossing Mat (For “How Do I Emboss With Dies?”)

An embossing mat is a soft mat that lets dies impress a design into paper instead of cutting all the way through. It’s great for faux letterpress vibes, subtle texture, and elegant backgrounds.

  • Perfect for tone-on-tone texture without bulk.
  • Also handy for a quick “faux deboss” look on sentiment panels.

4) Low-Tack Tape (Purple Tape / Washi Works Too)

Die shifting is one of the biggest annoyances in die cutting. A piece of low-tack tape keeps the die from sliding as it goes through the rollers.

  • Use to hold dies in place on cardstock.
  • Also helpful for partial die cutting techniques (where you only cut part of a shape).

5) Craft Dies (The Stars of the Show)

Of course you need the dies themselves. For beginners, the most versatile categories are:

  • Nesting shapes (circles, rectangles, ovals) for frames and mats
  • Word dies (hello, thanks, love) for quick card fronts
  • Florals/leaves for clusters, corners, and scrapbook accents

6) Double-Sided Adhesive Sheets (For Tiny/Intricate Die Cuts)

If you’ve ever tried to glue a skinny script word die cut… you already know why this tool matters. A double-sided adhesive sheet turns your die cut into a sticker.

  • Perfect for delicate word dies, lacey borders, tiny details.
  • Clean look, less glue mess, no warped paper from liquid glue.

🥪 The Basic Die Cutting “Sandwich” (No Guessing)

Every machine is slightly different, but this is the most common starting point for wafer-thin dies:

  1. Bottom cutting plate
  2. Cardstock/material
  3. Die (cutting edge facing down)
  4. Top cutting plate

Need more pressure? Add a metal shim (where your machine recommends—often between the bottom plate and material, or between plates depending on the model).

Tip: If you’re unsure, check your machine’s manual for the official sandwich. Start light. Add pressure slowly.

💡 What You Can Make With Die Cuts

Once you have the right tools, die cutting becomes a “use it everywhere” technique. Here are quick ideas:

  • Scrapbook titles (alphabet dies + shadow layer)
  • Tag sets for gifts, junk journals, or swaps
  • Layered embellishments for cluster corners
  • Frame panels for card fronts using nesting dies
  • Embossed backgrounds using dies + embossing mat
  • DIY bookmarks with a stitched edge die

🛠️ Quick Fixes: Incomplete Cuts, Shifting, Warping

My die didn’t cut all the way through.

  • Add a metal shim or a thin cardstock shim.
  • Run it through the machine one more time (same sandwich).
  • Rotate the die/plate position (plates wear unevenly).

My die shifted while cutting.

  • Tape the die down with low-tack tape.
  • Use smaller pieces of tape on opposite sides (less chance of lifting paper).

My cardstock warped.

  • Use less liquid glue (or swap to adhesive sheets).
  • Choose sturdier cardstock for heavy layering.
