9 Mixed Media Scrapbooking Tutorials That Are Easy to Follow!

Mixed media scrapbooking might sound complicated at first, but it’s really just the art of combining different mediums, textures, and techniques on one scrapbook page.

If you’re a scrapbooker who wants pages to feel more artistic, dimensional, and “finished,” these beginner-friendly ideas will help you get there without making the whole process feel overwhelming.

I. What Is Mixed Media Scrapbooking?

Traditional scrapbooking started as a way to preserve memories through photos, letters, recipes, poems, newspaper clippings, and keepsakes. Over time, it evolved into a more decorative and expressive art form built around memory keeping.

Mixed media scrapbooking happens when you combine those memory-keeping elements with artistic mediums like ink, watercolor, acrylic paint, embossing paste, markers, collage scraps, or textured backgrounds.

In other words: it’s scrapbooking, but with more texture, more experimentation, and a little more artistic freedom.

II. How Can I Make My Scrapbook More Attractive?

If your scrapbook pages feel flat or repetitive, the easiest fix is not “buy more embellishments.” It’s learning how to add layers, depth, movement, and texture.

That’s exactly where mixed media shines. Here are 9 easy ways to make your scrapbook pages feel more interesting and visually rich.

1. Use Gesso

Gesso is one of the most helpful mixed media basics because it creates a surface that helps other mediums sit nicely on your page. It can also soften busy backgrounds and add beautiful chalky texture.

Easy idea:

  • Apply gesso to cardstock with a palette knife or dry brush
  • Add torn book pages or newspaper scraps
  • Add another thin layer of gesso over the collage
  • Stencil through it for texture
  • Finish with watercolor, stamping, and a title

This creates a layered, artistic background without needing dozens of supplies.

2. Use Dye Inks

Dye inks are fantastic for scrapbookers because they are colorful, easy to use, and beginner-friendly. They work beautifully for stamping, soft blending, and direct-to-paper effects.

Try this:

  • Stamp images in coordinating ink colors
  • Die cut or fussy cut them
  • Rub mini ink cubes directly on the page underneath the image cluster
  • Create a loose “brushstroke” effect by applying heavier pressure at the top and lighter pressure lower down

The result feels artsy, but still very scrapbook-friendly.

3. Use Pigment Inks

Pigment inks stay wet longer than dye inks, which makes them perfect for blending, soft layering, and some stencil techniques. They tend to sit on the surface more and often look richer and more opaque.

Great beginner use:

  • Place a stencil on your page
  • Use an ink blending tool with pigment ink
  • Blend softly through the stencil for a smooth, dreamy background

If you like slower, more forgiving ink application, pigment ink is a lovely place to start.

4. Use Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint adds bold color and a slightly raw, artistic energy to scrapbook pages. Because it dries relatively quickly and can be archival, it’s a great option for background work.

Simple technique:

  • Paint a light wash of acrylic on white cardstock
  • While it is still slightly workable, stamp over it
  • Let the contrast between the paint and stamping do the heavy lifting

This creates a page that feels a little grungy, a little chic, and very handmade.

5. Use Liquid Watercolors

Liquid watercolors are perfect when you want color that feels lively, loose, and bright. They’re especially fun paired with texture.

One easy formula:

  • Cover cardstock with gesso
  • Apply embossing paste through a stencil
  • Let it dry fully
  • Paint over the textured background with liquid watercolor
  • Die cut shapes from that background for custom embellishments

This is such a good technique because one background can become both your page base and your decorative pieces.

6. Use Embossing Paste, Stencils, and Watercolors

This is one of those “oldie but goodie” mixed media combos that never stops being pretty. Texture paste plus soft color creates instant interest.

Try this layered look:

  • Make a watercolor or splattered background first
  • Let it dry
  • Add embossing paste through a stencil
  • Finish with die cuts, sequins, and a photo cluster

Your page immediately looks more dimensional and custom.

7. Use 3D Dies

If you want your scrapbook layouts to feel more dimensional, 3D dies are a gorgeous shortcut. They give you shape, layering, and texture in one move.

Pair them with watercolor backgrounds or colored cardstock, and your embellishments will feel much more sculptural than flat stickers or simple paper bits.

8. Use Old Book or Magazine Pages

This is one of the easiest low-supply mixed media techniques. Old book pages and magazine paper instantly add character, softness, and a collage feel.

Simple idea:

  • Cut or die cut floral shapes from old pages
  • Fold them slightly at the center for dimension
  • Add sequins or tiny embellishments to the centers
  • Layer with washi tape, leftover die cuts, or ephemera

It’s inexpensive, charming, and makes a page feel much more personal.

9. Use 3D Embossing Folders

Dry embossing is such an easy way to add texture fast. If you’ve never tried mixed media embossing on scrapbook pages, this is a beginner-friendly entry point.

Easy approach:

  • Run cardstock or patterned paper through an embossing folder
  • Trim to fit your layout design
  • Blend ink lightly over the raised areas
  • Add your photo, ephemera, and title cluster

You get instant background texture without needing wet mediums everywhere.
